A massive earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck southern and central Turkey, as well as northern and western Syria, at 04:17 TRT on February 6, 2023. The epicenter of the quake was located 37 kilometers to the west-northwest of Gaziantep. Another earthquake, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, occurred at 13:24 and was centered 95 kilometers north-northeast from the first earthquake. The devastation caused by the earthquakes resulted in widespread damage, and the loss of tens of thousands of lives, with a total of 57,658 fatalities and 121,704 people injured. In Turkey, 50,399 people lost their lives and 107,204 were injured, while in Syria, 7,259 people were killed and 14,500 injured. The total damage caused by the earthquakes is estimated to be US$109.1 billion.
